Cold plunges are everywhere right now. From athletes to influencers, everyone’s posting ice baths claiming life-changing results but do they actually work, or is it just another hype trend?
Here’s the truth. Cold exposure does have benefits but it’s not magic.
✅ Better recovery: Cold plunges can help reduce muscle soreness after intense training by lowering inflammation and improving circulation.
✅ Mood boost: The cold shock triggers a release of adrenaline and dopamine, which can leave you feeling more alert and energised after.
✅ Resilience training: Regular exposure to discomfort builds mental toughness a skill that carries over to training and life.
But here’s what it doesn’t do:
❌ It won’t burn loads of fat, the calorie burn is minimal.
❌ It doesn’t replace sleep, nutrition, or proper recovery.
❌ If overused, it might actually blunt muscle growth when done immediately after strength training.
Bottom line: Cold plunges are a great tool, if used wisely. Do them on rest days or a few hours after your session, not straight after lifting. You’ll get the recovery and mental benefits without slowing your progress.
Just don’t forget the basics: train hard, eat well, and sleep properly.
